Al Araby TV

Elliott Wood provided structural engineering services for the impressive new Al Araby TV Studios in Royal Park. The structural designs for the studios, including below ground drainage, consisted of the main studio building which has an overall floor area of 4,500m2, a 1,000m2 external plant room, the main open plan studio which is a 1,000m2, 7.25m floor to ceiling space with a cantilevered hanging mezzanines, studio 2 which is a 200m2 4.75m floor to ceiling room and studio 3 at 115m2 and 3.5m floor to ceiling.

To do this the construction of a new steel frame within an existing portal frame warehouse was created for the new studio spaces, including a high level lighting support and office mezzanine level. An external new-build steel framed building provides the plant room space and satellite support.

Due to the nature of broadcasting a recording, Elliott Wood worked with a vibration specialist to limit the natural frequency of surfaces supporting cameras to 10Hz and have a ‘low response factor’. The new structure was also separated from the existing portal frame shed to minimise vibration transfer and the secondary lighting grid over main studio connects to primary structure through the acoustic ceiling.
