Two grade II, listed, load bearing stone walled buildings situated on a steeply sloping site in the Cotswolds

More information

Two grade II, listed, load bearing stone walled buildings  originally occupied the site and are situated on a steeply sloping site in the Cotswolds, overlooking the valley below.  The buildings consisted of a small cottage and a separate dilapidated and unused barn.

The proposals involved linking the barn at ground floor level with a glazed link block and creating a low level extension to the main cottage.  The barn and cottage floors had approximately a storey height difference in level.

The creation of this lower space involved substantial underpinning of the original barn with exposed reinforced concrete retaining walls internally to enable the lower ground floor level to run through in to the extension.  This created a partial basement space but with windows to the front.

A direct link in to the barn was then created with new stairs up to the barn ground floor level effectively creating a fully linked extension with minimal impact on the appearance of the original buildings.
