More information

This project involves the extension and redevelopment of the current site reconstructing a new garden centre with additional units and parking.

The new 60,000 sq.ft. single storey structure consists of main curved glulam timber frames.  To provide a large interior space each frame consists of three beam segments supported on two interior steel columns and two exterior precast concrete columns. Steel decking spanning 7.5m between main beams will provide support to the roofing and internal ceiling finishes.  The central 19m span will consist of either typical solid roof construction or a raised ETFE skylight roof area supported by curved steel beams.

At the exterior, additional beam elements are to provide support to an external tensile roof structure as required.  On the entrance side of the building, this overhang extends approximately 7.5m from the exterior columns with a steel post provided for additional support.  On the other side, the overhang is approximately 3.5m and will be supported by a rigid connection back to the exterior precast concrete columns.

Stability for the structure is provided by the exterior precast concrete columns which will be designed to cantilever from the foundations with a rigid base connection.  The main steel roof deck will act as a diaphragm transmitting horizontal loads to the perimeter columns and providing continuous restraint to the main glulam beams.
