The Helix Sculpture
'The Helix' is a sculpture by the American artist Alyson Shotz and was erected for the 'Age of the Marvellous' exhibition at One Marylebone as part of London's Frieze week.
The sculpture is constructed from a central segmental steel spine that is prestressed to resist loadings applied to it in an external environment. Thin aluminium sheets cantilever out from the spine to create hollow panels which twist and change size regularly from one to next. At either end the last few panels are constructed from solid steel to act as anchorage blocks for the prestressing rod. The sculpture was founded on a temporary base formed from a grillage of small steel sections welded together and anchored in place. Dichroic acrylic was used to clad the sculpture, giving the effect you see below.
The sculpture was designed for a temporary exhibition with the pretext that it could be easily adjusted for a permanent situation.
