The Selfridges Group project is a redevelopment of a 1950s block, located next to Selfridges Group’s flagship Selfridges & Co. department store on London’s Oxford Street

The proposals, produced with Grafton Architects and backed by Selfridges Group, will add a storey and completely replace the frontages of the part-retail, part-office building at 388-396 Oxford Street.

Extensions will be formed of steel frame and CLT to yield a lightweight solution to mitigate the need for strengthening works to columns and foundations, bringing sustainability benefits from timber construction and reducing the need for new materials.

Piercy & Company Architects are working with flexible workspace company Fora, which has signed a management agreement with project backer Selfridges Group to take six storeys of the part-retail, part-office project. The Fora fit-out will occupy floors two to seven of the development, with the ground floor to be configured as 1- 4 retail units fronting Oxford Street and Duke Street. The design features an event space with an ‘impactful presence over two floors’, leading to a terrace.

The partnership between Selfridges Group and Fora will create a building with ‘a richness in materiality and sense of craftsmanship, with touches of difference and intrigue’.

The project, which is part of Selfridges Group’s wider ongoing transformation of the Duke Street area around Selfridges & Co., is due to complete in Autumn 2021.
