Contour House wins double Stone Awards

On Friday the 8th December, The Stone Federation hosted their biennial award ceremony to celebrate the best and brightest of natural stone construction projects from across the construction industry. Each year, hundreds of projects from around the UK are shortlisted to win one of the industry’s most sought-after accolades. The UK Stone Federation’s aim is to promote the use of natural stone as the versatile, durable and sustainable building material of choice. The awards were a great occasion to take stock of and celebrate natural stone in all its various forms and applications.

We are proud to announce that one of our projects, The Contour House, not only won in the Sustainability category, but was also in the New Build Modern Style Stone Cladding category. We welcome these as recognition of the striking design created by Sanei Hopkins Architects, supported by the innovative engineering of our team here at Elliott Wood.

The project is a private residence located in the Peak District National Park. With a curved form, made from dry stone walling following the site contours, this informs its apt name- Contour House.

The two-storey, 100m long curvilinear house required precision engineering, ensuring the aesthetics were further enhanced instead of compromised by structural elements. Reminiscent of the local vernacular, the team sourced 200mm thick, hand cut stones locally, keeping with the sustainable design direction. The stones were expertly cut and laid, and then tied back into the structural timber frame with concealed ties. The southern façade of the building contains large glazed openings at ground floor level to maximise the views over the property’s beautiful grounds, including the valley below. The dry-stone roof was cut and laid on top of a drainage layer, and restrained from sliding by intermittent stainless-steel angles screwed through to the roof diaphragm.

The Contour House blends seamlessly into its beautiful surroundings, an understated and elegant family residence within a naturally impressive location. Inside, we find a warm home with the best facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a games room and a wine cellar among others.

In addition to this, we’re delighted to say that only last month, The Contour House also won the Best Residential Scheme at the Peak District Planning Awards!
