The Ned Shortlisted for Structural Award

We are pleased to announce that The Ned has been shortlisted for the Structural Heritage category in the 2017 Structural Awards.

The Ned qualified for this category because of the structural solutions implemented to protect and maintain characteristics of the original Grade 1 listed structure. The main aspects of the building’s transformation included a two-storey roof extension, a pool, numerous bars, a 13.5 storey high vertical circulation core, and alterations to the building’s two existing domes.

The project required extensive problem solving due to the complexity of the existing structure, which led to creative solutions such as altering load paths at the upper floors and roof level to avoid strengthening works at existing lower floors, due to restrictions on the 4th and 5th floor. The location of the new circulation core was also an obstacle, as it was located directly above the proposed Northern line tube tunnel, which limited piling depth and led to the decision to not rely on the new core to provide stability for the building.
