Following its 2021 launch in Brisbane, Australia, the kinetic light artwork ‘The Living Lantern’ has continued its global tour, recently making its North American debut in New York City. From Australia to Taiwan, to Greece and now to the United States, this immersive art experience continues to awe and engage people from around the world with its dynamic, wind-responsive outer membrane that opens and closes to filter the light from its core.

Made in collaboration with design practice NEON and light artist Frankie Boyle Studio, The Living Lantern’s components fit together like a jigsaw puzzle on-site, allowing it to be installed and uninstalled with relative ease as tourable artwork. Elliott Wood helped refine the design of the interlocking CNC-milled plywood frame for the artwork and ensured that its engineering was structurally sound in external environments.

The artwork’s structure was engineered to minimise its impact on installation sites - our ballast design ensures that it can sit directly on the ground without the need for embedded foundations, and can be dismantled leaving no trace.

The Living Lantern will be on display in New York City until 24 February.
