Tower Hamlets Town Hall Shortlisted for IStructE Awards

We are delighted to announce that our project, Tower Hamlets Town Hall, has been shortlisted for the prestigious IStructE Structural Awards 2023. The awards for structural engineering excellence, celebrate outstanding contributions by structural engineers to industry and society.

Tower Hamlets Town Hall is a landmark project that transformed the Grade II listed former Royal London Hospital into a modern and sustainable civic centre for London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The project involved extensive structural interventions, including the removal of large sections of the existing floor slab to create a new central atrium and circulation space, strengthening the existing concrete frame to meet current standards and accommodate new loads and integration of new steel-framed extensions.

The project showcases our creative and collaborative approach to structural engineering, as well as our commitment to creating spaces – not just aesthetically and commercially – but for the benefit of the planet and people who use them every day.

The judges praised the project for its sustainability and minimal intervention, saying:

"The team worked collaboratively to limit repairs and replacement in the complex existing building, creating large savings in embodied carbon through the retention of the historic structure.

The sympathetic repairs, allowed for the careful insertion of new lift shafts and service openings within the existing fabric. Introducing large, steel box frames at ground floor level enabled the team to make a feature of the existing historic steelwork while opening up the space."

We are honoured to be recognised by the IStructE and we look forward to attending the awards ceremony on 12 November 2023 in London.
