Structural Steel Design Awards – Corten House Merit – Latest

Our design for a corten steel house in West London has received a merit at the Structural Steel Design Awards. The rust-like appearance of the weathered corten steel cladding is a striking feature of the cutting-edge design of this private dwelling.

The main challenge associated with the design was the detailing. To achieve the Architect’s proposed geometry and the desired millimetre accuracy in alignment of finishes, required a huge number of bespoke steel connections and steel to structural glass interfaces. It was also important to ensure rainwater run-off from the Corten would not stain or scratch the glass, and to detail steel connections to the outer Corten skin with thermal breaks to avoid cold-bridging.
