The Department Store Studios shortlisted for NLA Award! – Latest

We’re thrilled that The Department Store Studios in Brixton has been shortlisted for the Environmental Sustainability Prize at this year’s New London Architecture (NLA) Awards! It is among six projects shortlisted in this Special Prize category, which recognises the most sustainable projects in London.

The Department Store Studios is a new four-storey contemporary workspace next door to Squire & Partners’ award-winning offices in Brixton, London. Designed, developed, and operated by the practice, the new development creates a platform for growing businesses with flexible workspaces – from individual desks to private studios – alongside a host of serviced social and meeting areas.

Externally, The Studios pays homage to its sister development’s Edwardian aesthetic with patterned red brickwork and contemporary faceted bay windows. A setback fourth floor responds to the surrounding residential streets and creates generous planted external terraces. Internally, designs are centred on sustainability and the honesty of raw materials, with an exposed timber superstructure consisting of CLT floors supported on glulam beams and columns.

The Department Store Studios is a highly sustainable development that will support local businesses by offering a Residency scheme for young entrepreneurs and a programme of events curated to share skills, inspire creativity and expand local networks.
