Grønlikaia, Oslo – Projects

Grønlikaia,
Oslo

Grønlikaia is a major new waterfront transformation project in the heart of Oslo. As one of the last waterfront sites in the city, the development represents an opportunity to create an inclusive and diverse “fjord city”, aimed at a wide variety of Oslo’s population, including the underserved communities of the eastern parts of the city.

Sustainability is central to all the work that Londonon undertakes and also forms the core of our work in this project. To develop Grønlikaia, the proposed scheme for the waterfront in Oslo, we gathered a team of experts in sustainability, placemaking, new forms of living, circular and doughnut economy, landscape design, and waterfront development. The result is an exemplar project, making the water more accessible and creating new public spaces, cultural institutions, active streetscapes, and exceptional architecture.

Grønlikaia presents a new fjord city for the east of Oslo. It will offer a richer, vibrant and more diverse area, which belongs to all. New transportation routes make the area better accessible and new forms of living and models of ownership have been proposed to create more diverse and affordable housing, enabling more people to live in the city centre. Londonon has drawn on experience of applying different housing models such as affordable housing, mixed tenure, shared ownership, co-living and intergenerational living, showing examples that might be relevant to Oslo as well.

The proposal will accommodate all the inhabitants of the site, both above and below the water. The proposal uses upcycled marine steel to create a low carbon new quay-front and new habitats for fish, which will help to maintain existing marine and land based natural resources as a central tenet of the development. All new buildings are designed to create better ecological conditions, contributing to the much-needed restoration of marine life in the Oslo fjord.
