Gelendzhik Airport, Russia – Projects

Elliott Wood worked closely with Grimshaw Architects to develop an early conceptual design for Gelendzhik’s new airport in South East Russia. The Team responded to the brief and context to produce an undulating steel modular gridshell spaceframe roof. The heights of the large column free spaces matched the ‘rest period’ of the spaces below and responded to both the security and logistical needs of the facility.

Elliott Wood used parametric scripts extensively to optimise and rationalise the roof shell geometry. Efforts were also made to explore the practical off site manufacture and erection of the lightweight roof which provides both a major iconic landmark for the region, and a vital piece of infrastructure.
