One Portwall Square, Bristol – Projects

One Portwall Square,
Bristol

One Portwall Square is a new commercial development in the heart of Bristol’s Brunel Mile, between Millennium Square and Temple Meads railway station.

The six storey freestanding office building replaces a disused squash court that had been built on the site of the former Mardon’s Printing factory, which was bombed heavily during the Blitz. Coupled with significant archaeology, the ground was particularly challenging; requiring a flexible foundation strategy to be adopted. This required significant research into the area’s history going back to medieval times and previous development proposals.

Taking cues from the White Collar Factory and the Tea Building in East London, the project calls for an open plan flexible space with exposed structure and raw finishes creating a modern industrial aesthetic.

In December 2022, One Portwall Square became the new base for AHMM’s Bristol office, with the practice letting the ground and first floor of the building.
