Pastfield, Henley-on-Thames – Projects

Pastfield,
Henley-on-Thames

This new, single-storey home was planned to be sympathetic to an existing 1950’s house already on the site designed by architect Patrick Gwynne.

The building features a series of gently sloping cantilevered roofs and large, column-free windows.  Working closely with the architect, its structural design was developed to ensure the projecting roofs and other structural elements were exceptionally slender in profile. Careful detailing helped maintain this aesthetic: for example, a hidden gutter was created for the edges of the cantilevered roofs to maintain a streamlined profile.

A lightweight steel frame was adopted for the primary structure with timber joists spanning between the steels to support the roof and perimeter walls.  The steel structure enabled the ambitious cantilevers; it also enabled the structure to span the elongated glazed elements that feature on some elevations.
