Silverstone UTC, Northamptonshire – Projects

Silverstone UTC,
Northamptonshire

Elliott Wood, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, procured the Silverstone UTC project under the Government Contractors Framework.

The building is steel-framed with pre-cast concrete floors and exposed soffits to provide thermal mass. Elliott Wood created efficiencies in the steel frame by designing a typical repeating module along the length of the building. The building’s end modules were bespoke to deliver the desired architectural form. This design both minimised the amount of steel used – creating a structural efficiency exceeding 95 percent – and contributed to the swift completion of the project within 13 months.

To minimise the impact on the existing drainage infrastructure, we designed a sustainable urban drainage system (SuDS), which limited the surface water outfall to the equivalent of greenfield runoff. Sustainability credentials include the building designed on PassivHaus principles, exposed thermal mass of the structure used with natural ventilation and supplemented by peak lopping provided by air source heat pumps. The building model was fully coordinated with the architect using 3D BIM software.
